Garden edging is the practice of separating your garden and lawn. This can be done through various methods and using various materials including steel garden edging. The end result creates clean, crisp lines between your garden beds and other areas in your yard. It’s most commonly used between a lawn and an adjoining garden, but garden edging can also be used to separate lawn from gravel and pathways, used to surround a shrub bed, a single tree, or as a transition from a patio/entertainment area to the surrounding landscaping.
From a practical standpoint, garden edging helps to keep your lawn and garden separate. It prevents soil or mulch in garden beds from spilling onto the lawn. Garden edging also contains loose gravel or mulch to certain areas or pathways; it maintains clearly defined walkways while keeping the path materials in place.
From a visual standpoint, garden edging creates crisp, clean lines in your garden design. It can also draw the eye along certain paths and directions which can be used to good effect.
Weathering steel (often referred to as COR-TEN or corten steel) was developed to eliminate the need for painting steel. Instead of needing paint as a protective layer, weathering steel forms a stable external layer of rust if left outside, exposed to the elements for just a few months.
The external layer of weathered steel seals it off from the atmosphere. If a weathered steel panel is scratched, it’s surface will self-heal. The weathered steel is only not protected against further corrosion: it also delivers a unique finish that is an aesthetically pleasing – a warm, dark-brown, textured appearance that needs low or no maintenance.
Plastic garden edging can seem like a good option due to its more affordable price, however the low cost comes with less durability for the outdoor elements. Plastic edging can withstand light to moderate wear and tear however as it’s exposed to harsh weather and prolonged time in the elements, it’s common to end up with broken plastic edging.
Metal garden edging is often the go-to choice for modern landscape designs. It’s highly durable and long-lasting, and is also relatively low maintenance, with little to no upkeep required with a great aesthetic appearance in your garden.
