What is mulch?

Mulch refers to the material used to cover the surface around the roots of your plants to support its growth. From straw to pine bark, mulch comes in various types and can serve many purposes. It is used to keep the moisture in your soil, protect your soil from disturbance, maintain soil health and reduce weed growth. Serving such a range of functions, mulch can be an invaluable addition to your garden landscaping.

How to use mulch

If you have established mulch would be a great addition to your garden, it is important to use it correctly to optimise its benefits. An even mulch layer is best, at around 5cm-10cm thick. If you create a layer too thick, oxygen will not be able to reach the plant’s roots.

It’s recommended you check your mulch every spring as organic mulch materials will break down over time and probably need to be replaced so the mulch serves its purpose.

Which mulch is right for your garden?

Shredded bark is a popular mulching option, being relatively affordable and environmentally friendly. This is optimal for sloping areas, however, it can absorb nitrogen from the soil. Straw is another option, with a golden colour that can provide brightness and warmth to your garden beds. They provide good water retention and can control weed growth as long as the straw doesn’t have weed seeds. Stones are another alternative, however, are not as affordable and are inorganic so they do not break down and feed the soil. However, stones are often aesthetically pleasing and do not require to be reapplied year after year.
